Cover story:
High Flying Homer Ellis

Retired doctor Homer Ellis of Fort Smith may be more familiar to readers as the obstetrician who delivered them – or one of their children. Ellis did deliver hundreds of babies in his long-time practice
of medicine. But his off-duty passion is aviation. Friend, photographer and fellow physician J.P. Bell brings us this story about Ellis' passion for flying with a retrospective of Ellis' many unusual planes.

Four-wheel fun Considering an all-terrain vehicle? Here's a primer on the many trails established by ATV clubs and some advice on choosing a machine. Photos by Kat Wilson.
Whitewater woman When Diane Cheshier, the assistant director of the Fort Smith Public Library, can get away, she and her husband head for the mountains of Colorado to ride the whitewater rapids of the snow-melt streams. Cheshier shares this summer's getaway, when she and Andy took on the Arkansas River, Taylor River and other pulse-pounding runs.
Tessa Freeman is our staff's fashionista – But she braved nature to attend "Becoming An Outdoors-Woman," a popular seminar held annually by the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission. After some classes and a couple of nights in the woods, she's got a tale to tell and even some survival skills beyond "don't forget the eyeliner."
If it walks like a duck – Dr. J.C. Clemons probably has it in his office on a shelf or cabinet. Linda Seubold takes a look at Clemons' extensive collection of all things ducky.

  HOT STUFF:

New Fort Chaffee Museums Have Patrons All Shook Up
By Linda Seubold

Realizing the long-time dream of Jan Honeycutt's students and Elvis fans everywhere, building 803 at Fort Chaffee has been opened as a museum. The attraction, now a part of Chaffee Crossing, was supported by the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority. The location of Elvis' G.I. haircut in 1958, with authentic barber chair and barber tools, fronts a larger museum of the whole history of the military base.

Also opening in September, a Vietnam Veterans museum and a private doll museum help make up a historic district of the fort near Fort Smith, Ark. where many soldiers were processed on their way to World War II. The museums also recognize the base as an processing center for Vietnamese immigrants and refugees from Cuba's Mariel boatlift.
