Clayton House Family History Series: “Tracing the Miles of a Family Business: Robert A. Young, III”

August 28, 2016
1:00 p.m.

Trace the miles back to the beginning of the powerful journey of ArcBest with Robert A. Young, III, as he shares his family history. From the home of a father who owned his own construction and coal-mining companies in Greenwood at the turn of the century came the second Robert A. Young, born in 1908. Beginning his career as a Fort Smith attorney in 1933, R. A. Young, Jr., bought a small regional freight-hauling company in 1951 from clients who were ready to retire. With determination and resourcefulness he had learned from his father, he mined the trucking industry for success and built a national freight carrier. Robert A. Young, III, who loaded freight in the hot summers of his teen years, officially joined the company in 1964. Upon his father's death in 1973, he became president and kept the pedal to the metal, leading the company to become a premier provider of transportation services across the country with a global reach of shipping and logistics services. Mr. Young will share photos and stories of his family, reaching back to his great-grandfather, J.W. Young, a Fort Smith contractor whose name can still be seen imprinted in Fort Smith sidewalks.
