ELKS ANNUAL SPECIAL NEEDS / YOUTH FISHING DERBY

8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

The Elks Annual Special Needs Youth Fishing Derby is for all area youth ages 2 to 12 and all ages for youth/adult with special needs. Registrations begin at 8:00am at Wells Lake located beside the Janet Huckabee Nature Center. Look for the Elk banner. The Fishing Competition will begin promptly at 9:00am and will end with the sounding of the air horn at 11:30am. Only fish caught by registered youth will be measured and entered into the competitions. No fish caught before 9am will be measured, nor will any fish considered caught by an adult throughout the derby be allowed to enter the contest, with the exception of registered adult participants with special needs. Prizes will be awarded during the FREE picnic lunch from 12:00-12:30. Youth will compete in 3 age categories: 4-years and younger, 5 - 8 yrs, and 9-12yrs. Special Needs will compete according to age and/or disability. A limited number of fishing poles will be available to be loaned and will be on a first-come-first-serve basis to those who do not have a fishing pole. A limited amount of bait will be given to those who do not bring their own bait. However, if possible, it is best to bring your own fishing equipment and bait. Prizes will be awarded for the most fish caught and largest fish in each age category. All participants and their attending families will be treated to a FREE picnic lunch by the Elks Lodge Master Grillers at noon. Elroy the Elk will be on hand to give out goody bags to the youth and also for photo opportunities, so be sure to bring your camera. The Elks Drug Awareness trailer will be on site handing out free materials to the youth and adults about the importance of not using drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. The Sebastian County Sheriff Office will have a K-9 Unit there for the enjoyment of the children, as well as, the Fort Smith Fire Department to give safety training. It is advised that parents be mindful of the weather and bring their own camp chairs, bug spray, and sunscreen These will NOT be furnished during the Fishing Derby. There will be water available.
