Europe in Eureka Springs: A Visit and Slide Presentation with Photographer Eli Vega

September 21, 2016
7:00 p.m.

Published photographer, instructor, and author Eli Vega will offer an artistic look at Eurkea Springs in his Europe in Eureka presentation. A recent arrival to Eureka Springs, Vega takes a fresh look, with a new set of eyes as he walks and drives around town and its environs. One thing that quickly jumped out at the photographer were the many scenes, spots, locales, and buildings that are reminiscent of Europe. The artist has compiled over 50 photo images that depict the European likeness. Friends of Eli’s who have travelled extensively in Europe have remarked on their similarities to placed encountered in their travels. On your next visit to Eureka Springs, you’ll want to go on a scavenger hunt and find the places presented during the photographer’s visit. Born in a railroad boxcar in Wyoming, to poor migrant parents of Mexican/Spanish descent, Eli Vega grew up in west Texas near Lubbock, where he failed first grade due to the language barrier. Eli feels it was a miracle that he stayed in, much less finished, school. His male role models were, for the most part, where school drop-outs, alcoholics, or ruffians. The only art he was exposed to was body art—tattoos on human canvasses. Realizing that he liked art in second grade, Vega wasn’t able to gain artistic know-how that became the foundation for his photography until he enrolled in college. Twenty years after his art days in college he bought his first 35mm SLR camera. Today, he offers photography classes, 1-on-1 photography lessons, and his 3-5 day Right Brain Photography workshops. He also spends a lot of time writing educational photography books including, his latest book Right Brain Photography. Copies of the author’s books will be available for sale and signing at the event.
