Clayton House “Knox Street Book Review”: Quartermaster General: A Conflict of Loyalties

November 4, 2016
5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Enjoy this immersion into Civil War history with the review of a book based on the memoirs of a Confederate general with Fort Smith roots. Visiting author Charles P. “Chuck” Cabell of Colorado Springs will share the story of his book, subtitled The Civil War Memoirs of Brigadier General William L. Cabell, CSA (1827 – 1911), at the Clayton House with an evening reception and presentation. Union-turned-Confederate soldier William Cabell, Chuck Cabell’s great-grandfather, married Fort Smith resident Amanda Rector just before the Civil War and then forged a career of Confederate leadership. He served as Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac under General P.G.T. Beauregard, organized one of the largest cavalry brigades west of the Mississippi, and commanded that brigade in more than 20 engagements in Arkansas and Missouri. Great-grandson Chuck Cabell graduated from the United States Military Academy 108 years after William Cabell (1958). Retiring after 30 years with the U.S. Air Force, Cabell holds advanced degrees in aeronautics, systems management and public administration. He flew B-47 and B52 bombers during the Cuban Missile Crisis and F-4 Phantom fighter missions in South Vietnam, and served as a Pentagon military assistant. The Clayton House, with its 1852 origins (U. S. Attorney W. H. H. Clayton purchased and enlarged the antebellum home in 1882) is the perfect setting for this unique glimpse into the Civil War by a unique and distinguished author. Reserve $10 tickets at www.claytonhouse.org or by calling the museum at 783-3000.
