Clayton Conversations:

February 26, 2017
1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Ride a trail of history that travels from the first bicycle invented through the development of bicycling in the 1800s and to the sport today that is blazing trails in both communities and individuals’ lives. The Clayton House welcomes speakers representing the past, present and future of bicycling for this program that will both entertain and inspire. Sharing 2-wheel history from the wooden “swiftwalker” (1817) to the “velocipede” (it had pedals but was known as the “boneshaker”), to the High Wheel (1871), the Rover (1885, with an adjustable seat!) and beyond is Cris Slaymaker, education outreach speaker from the Old Statehouse Museum in Little Rock. This state history museum held an exhibit in 2016 called “Different Spokes” and is sharing it resources, including a display that will be at the Clayton House for the month of February. Taking the handle bars next in this hour-long program will be Josh Carroll, ambassador for the trail-blazing bicycle shop Phat Tire. Founded in Bentonville by young cyclists who want to make their communities “cool and healthy,” Phat Tire now has three locations in Northwest Arkansas, one in Fort Smith (opened in 2014), and two new stores in Tulsa. Josh will provide an explanation for novices of what kind of bikes are available for the variety of riders and surfaces today. Enjoy an exhibit of bikes and bike history beginning at 1:00 p.m. preceding the 1:30 p.m. presentation. The program wraps up with an update by Drew Linder, committee chair of Trails and Greenways in Fort Smith. Learn about our area’s current and future trails, and then, get on your bike and ride!

Admission: $10; free to members of the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation
