Fort Smith Historical Society Monthly MeetingMay 10, 2017
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Cody Faber, Park Ranger with the Fort Smith Historic Site, will be the guest speaker for the monthly meeting of the Fort Smith Historical Society. Ranger Faber will speak on the Battle of Massard Prairie, a Civil War battle that took place south of Fort Smith in July of 1864. On July 27th, 1864 four companies of United States cavalry stationed at Massard Prairie just south of the city of Fort Smith awoke to the sight of nearly 600 Confederate cavalry charging upon their camp. The Confederate forces were a mix of Texans and Native American units and led by Richard Gano. Within an hour most of the fighting was complete. Nearly 150 Union soldiers were either killed or captured and the region would reel in the fact of a nearly one-sided Confederate victory. More telling than just the fight is the aftermath that followed, the story of the individual soldiers involved, and how this type battle typified much of the nature of the war in this region of the country. The public is invited.
