Larry Foley's The Favored Strawberry - Fort Smith Film Premier

July 18, 2017
7:00 p.m.

The Fort Smith Public Library invites you to join Emmy award-winning filmmaker, UA journalism professor, and Fort Smith native Larry Foley for a screening of his new film, The Favored Strawberry. The one-hour documentary was filmed in 8 states, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland and California. The story unfolds at farms, big and small, where strawberries are still picked by hand, one by one, often by hard working immigrants chasing the American dream. There’s an old saying-- “Doubtless, God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did.” Wherever they’re grown, the best way to eat a strawberry is picked fresh from the vine. Or as soon off the truck as you can find them! Copies of The Favored Strawberry DVD will be available for sale at the event. Veteran journalist, educator and documentary filmmaker Larry Foley is a professor and chair of the Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas. His productions have earned seven Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and 17 Emmy nominations in writing, journalistic enterprise, history, cultural history, special program and community service. His films have also received three Best of Festival of Media Arts awards from the international Broadcast Education Association. Larry’s late father, Don Foley, worked at a strawberry processing plant in Van Buren when he was a teenager in the 1950s, in the days when strawberries were grown in the bottoms of Crawford County.

Admission: Free.
