Fort Smith Historical Society Monthly MeetingAugust 9, 2017
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Vini Scott will present his paper and research project, "Not in My Backyard", a senior portfolio project requirement for graduation at UAFS for the Fort Smith Historical Society at their monthly meeting. Mr. Scott will use the following argument to present a program on Elm Grove, a housing project in Fort Smith. "Nimbyism is a catchphrase used to describe the phenomenon of "white flight" in a post-civil rights era. It stands for: “Not in my backyard.” The arguments posed are a testimony of the continuing epidemic of racially engineered demography in American Cities, especially in the New South. The housing administrations in the modern context are the product of generations of class and racial systems built to reward subsidized housing construction in areas of urban blight and a lower functioning infrastructure, while suburban expansion and gentrification continue to promote white elitism and class separation." Meetings are free and open to members and the Public.
