Christmas Honors Ceremony & Laying of the Wreaths at Fort Smith National CemeteryDecember 16, 2017
Citizens of the Fort Smith region are invited to participate in the 9th Annual Christmas Honors. This event honors the servicemen and women of our community who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation by placing one wreath on each of the 16,000+ headstones at the Fort Smith National Cemetery. Schedule: Family Time will be 8-10:30 a.m. Please respect this time to allow the families of our heroes to lay wreaths on their loved one’s headstone(s). Public ceremony at the pavilion at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony, attendees will help to lay wreaths on all the remaining headstones. Guest speaker at the ceremony will be Deena Burnett Bailey, the widow of Tom Burnett, a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. She has been a well-known voice for the victim’s families of 9/11. Burnett Bailey has appeared on all major television networks, appeared in more than 1000 newspapers and magazines and has been interviewed by national figures such as Barbara Walters, Peter Jennings, Oprah Winfrey, Matt Lauer and Diane Sawyer. She has participated in the making of 23 documentaries and 1 major film about the heroic actions of the passengers of Flight 93, who downed the plane to thwart the terrorists' attempt to strike Washington, D.C.
