Soiled Doves: Contesting the Old West's Depiction of Prostitution

July 9, 2018
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Fort Smith values its heritage as a rough-and-tumble frontier town with a tolerance for prostitution, a narrative that mixes truth and a good story, sometimes in equal measure. Micki Voelkel and Shelli Henehan of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will stand that narrative on its head when they speak to members of the Zonta Club of Fort Smith and guests at 6 p.m. July 9 in the community room of the Fort Smith Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. Voelkel and Henehan will examine Fort Smith’s much-discussed version of the world’s oldest profession: “Soiled Doves” and Heritage Tourism: Contesting the Old West’s Depiction of Prostitution. Their presentation will explore the values reflected in the traditional narrative and ask whether sites like Miss Laura’s Social Club have a responsibility to present multiple points of view. “I think this will be a fun and challenging topic,” said Deborah Chapman, the president of the Fort Smith club. “I hope we have a lot of people from the community participate. The more people we have in attendance, the better the discussion will be. And this gives anyone curious about Zonta a chance to learn more by visiting with our members.”

Admission: Free.
