Fort Smith Historical Society Monthly Meeting

August 8, 2018
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Brandon Chase Goldsmith will discuss his research and preview his play "The Western District", written in celebration of Fort Smith's bicentennial, at the monthly meeting of the Fort Smith Historical Society. He will discuss a pivotal point in local history when the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas moved form Van Buren to Fort Smith. The story concerns 14 months in 1871-1872 while court was held at "The Hole in the Wall" saloon, now 21 West End. A web of corrupt officials from the courts and the ranks of law enforcement ran up huge personal profits under the guise of justice. Goldsmith's deep research also covers the factual events surrounding the founding of 1st National Bank and the arrival of Judge Isaac C. Parker to the bench at Fort Smith.
