Arts On Main, the brand-new art education center and galleries, is now open on Main Street in Van Buren. Free and for-fee classes are offered in summer tailored to specific ages and abilities. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Sunday; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.

ARTS ON MAIN CREATIVE U STUDIO

Every day at Arts on Main, Creative U Studio is open for children and youth to enjoy. Children under age 10 require adult supervision. Kids can explore art-making experiences using light and touch interactive screens that are fun for all ages. Visitors are allowed to use their hands to draw, add color, change light patterns and try other activities that allow for infinite, hands-on creativity. Free.

Wonderful World of Art 10 a.m.-noon.
Mixed Media Art Ages 12-14
An exciting exploration of techniques, materials and innovative combinations. Experiment with watercolor, acrylic, ink, found objects and ephemera. Discover collage, printmaking, altered book, monotype and assemblage techniques, and visit the galleries for reference, inspiration and demonstrations. $20 per class.

June 13-17 or July 18-22 (2 separate events) 9-11 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. 
Imagination Abstraction Collage: A New Way of Looking Cool
Look to important abstract artists for a five-day, hands-on class for ages 5 and up.
Monday, Two Point Perspective and Color to create a fun cityscape. Kids work to collage a real or imaginary place as they look at artists Rackstraw Downes and Robert Rauschenberg.
Tuesday: The Elements and Principles of Art – inspired by Wasily Kandinsky.
Wednesday: Tissue Paper, Watercolor, Bowl of Fruit –Students will be able to look at the artwork of Henri Matisse and create their own collage based still
life.
Thursday: Scale and Dimension, making surreal animals using Salvador Dali’s Elephants displays.
Friday, Portraits, guided by Picasso.
$100 for the week.

SERIOUSLY CREATIVE STEAM ART
June 27-July 1
STEAM Art: Art robots for Ages 8-14
Design and build a robot that performs an Art function, either drawing or painting. Students will then create individual art designs with their robots. Taking what they've learned with their robots, students will create a large collaborative art piece. Other fun art projects will be explored using various art mediums from a scientist's perspective. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily


July 11-15
Concrete Art Ideas for Ages 10-16
Learn to use industrial materials and expand your creative skills and knowledge. Using science, technology, engineering and math skills, students will design and create a variety of useful art projects, including Elephant Ear bowls, balloon candleholders, paper clip holders and an air plant stand. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily

July 25-29
Smart Art for ages 8-14
Infused with math and science concepts, students will participate in creating a big Circle Design, 3D Geometric Wall Hanging and a Pythagorean proof puzzle. Other fun art projects will be explored using various art mediums from a scientist's perspective. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily


WEE DRAW IN JUNE
Ages 3-5
Classes for this age group are parent-optional, which means you can stay and participate with your little one, or relax on the Rooftop patio or enjoy the Arts On Main library for a well-deserved moment to yourself. 10-11 a.m. $10 per class.


June 6
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Students will hear the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, then use watercolor and tissue paper to create their very own hungry caterpillar.

June 8
Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?
Hear “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?” by Eric Carle then use shapes to make their own brown bear.


June 13
The Giving Tree
Hear the story of “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein and create trees using your own thumbprints.

June 15
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Listen to selected poems from Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” and create landscapes inspired by Peter Max.


June 20
One Fish, Two Fish
Hear “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and create an aquarium of fish.


June 22
Oh, The Places You'll Go!
Listen to the book by Dr. Seuss and create hot air balloons to decorate, as well as talk about the places students want to go.

June 27
The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food
Students will get to listen to the story then create a still life of food.


June 29
The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute Anymore
After story time, students will use recycled materials to create egg carton dragonflies.

Students will learn about surrealist art and work together to create images like surrealist artists such as Yves Tanguy did.


July 7
Form
Students will learn about surrealist art and work together to create images like the surrealist artists such as Yves Tanguy did.

July 12
Color
Go on a color scavenger hunt and find items around the room that match the colors given to you, then create a still life with your found objects. We will take a look at artist Hilary Pecis as inspiration.

July 14
Textures
Learn about different fun textures by painting cats! We will explore what different textures do to the cat’s fur.

July 19
Lines
Look at the work of Roy Lichentstein and the way he uses lines in his pop art. Then, create your own pop art portraits.


July 21
Space
Learn about the horizon line and how things can be perceived at different distances based on where you put them on the horizon line by cutting out construction paper and gluing it into a composition.


July 26
Values
Look at some of Brian Clarke’s stained glass windows as inspiration. Explore how different colors can look based on light.


July 28
Shapes
Create geometric abstract works by laying overlapping shapes down and painting within them to create all kinds of new shapes.
